Om museet

Maximilian Schmidt was born in Eschlkam in 1832 and was one of the most widely read and performed authors in Bavaria in the 19th century. His oeuvre comprises some 60 major folk tales, about 40 humorous sketches and just as many stage plays, as well as numerous poems; many stories are set in the Bavarian Forest and the Bohemian Forest. King Ludwig II appointed him Hofrat (court councillor) in 1884, and in 1898 Prince Regent Luitpold granted him the hereditary name addition "genannt Waldschmidt" (called Waldschmidt).

Schmidt was also committed to tourism and in 1895 organized a folk costume festival with a parade, which is regarded as the model for today's Oktoberfest costume parades. The Waldschmidt-Verein Eschlkam, founded in 1984, keeps his memory alive and awards the Waldschmidt-Preis every year.

The exhibition is housed in the Waldschmidthaus, opened in 2017, the extension of the town hall in the village center. The Markt Eschlkam newly set it up in 2019 together with its partner municipality Všeruby. On display are personal belongings, photographs, documents and books from his estate, provided by a great-grandson and the Waldschmidt-Verein. Particular attention is paid to Schmidt's connections to Bohemia.
