Om museet

The Weinbaumuseum is housed in the former tithe barn of Achkarren. From 1315 to 1806 the building belonged to the Order of St. John (Johanniterorden), whose cross can still be seen on the gate; as early as the late Middle Ages a "St. Johanser Trotte" (wine press) is mentioned here.

Today the museum shows how viticulture on the Kaiserstuhl has developed, from cultivation through grape processing and cellar management to the cooperative system. Old tools, bottle labels, deeds and other documents illustrate this development, while different soil profiles explain why the volcanic Kaiserstuhl is a special wine region.

The museum is run by the Verein Kaiserstühler Weinbaumuseum e. V., which seeks members and donations to maintain the house. The museum also hosts events; in 2025, for example, as part of a "Kultursommer" with several dates.
