Werkbundarchiv – Museum der Dinge
Museum of everyday objects and product design of the 20th and 21st centuries, with the archive of the Deutscher Werkbund in Berlin-Mitte.
Om museet
The Werkbundarchiv was founded in 1973 as a nonprofit association with the aim of safeguarding evidence of the Deutscher Werkbund, founded in 1907. This association of artists, architects, entrepreneurs and politicians wanted to renew the design of industrially manufactured goods and focused on quality, truth to materials and simple, unornamented forms. From the archive work, a museum gradually grew that collects everyday objects alongside Werkbund documents.
For many years the museum was housed in a former workshop building on Oranienstraße in Kreuzberg. In November 2023 it closed there and, after a break of about seven months, moved into the ground floor of a commercial building on Leipziger Straße in Berlin-Mitte, where it reopened on May 22, 2024. Since November 2024 the new permanent exhibition has been on view there.
The collection ranges from Werkbund products and anonymous mass-produced goods to crafts and design classics. In the "Offenes Depot" (Open Storage), around 15,000 objects stand densely packed in display cases and cabinets – making it possible to follow how things are designed, made, traded, used, repaired and thrown away. Because the exhibition space is smaller than before, part of the holdings, such as most of the furniture collection, remains in storage. The museum is run by the association Werkbundarchiv and funded by the State of Berlin.
