Om museet
The bunker on the road from Sinz to Kreuzweiler was built in 1940, in the final phase of the West Wall construction. It belongs to the Orscholzriegel, a line of fortifications between the Mosel near Nennig and the Saar loop near Orscholz, and carries the Wehrmacht designation R 53. It was built as a Regelbau 501, a group shelter for a garrison of 14 men.
During the war, residents of Kreuzweilerstraße were temporarily allowed to use the bunker as an air-raid shelter; in winter 1944/45, the entrance courtyard served as a mortar position. After 1945, French occupation forces blew up much of the Orscholzriegel installations, but this bunker survived because neighboring houses would otherwise have been damaged. In the 1960s it was covered with earth, so that only parts of the wing wall and the roof edge remained visible.
At the end of 1997, a private individual from Perl-Besch bought the structure and restored it on his own initiative. It has been open as a museum since 2002, and most of the interior fittings are working again. The museum commemorates the Nazi era, the battles on the Orscholzriegel in winter 1944/45 and the postwar period in the border region. It is run by the association Westwallmuseen-Saar-Mosel.
