Ziegeleimuseum Sondernheim
Privately restored brickworks from 1834 near Germersheim with a ring kiln, drying sheds, narrow-gauge rides, and species-rich natural grounds – visits by registration.
Om museet
The brickworks in the Germersheim district of Sondernheim was founded in 1834 by the Stubenrauch brothers. Initially the bricks were shaped by hand and fired in field kilns; from the mid-19th century, extrusion presses increased production considerably. The clay was first supplied by pits in the surrounding area, later also by ships from the other bank of the Rhine, and it was transported by oxen, donkeys, and a small narrow-gauge railway. In 1960 the ring kiln was expanded and a closed drying hall was built; shortly afterward operations ended.
After closure, the complex passed to the state of Rhineland-Palatinate and was placed under protection as an industrial monument in 1984, but fell increasingly into disrepair. In private ownership since 2000, it was renovated over the years in keeping with heritage requirements: roofs and drying sheds were repaired, and machinery and accessories from other brickworks were acquired and refurbished. In 2008, an exhibition on craftsmanship, technology, and family history opened in the former machine room; in 2010 the ensemble received the state's heritage prize.
Today the ring kiln, drying sheds, forge, and a narrow-gauge railway with historic diesel locomotives are part of the museum. The grounds lie within the Pfälzische Rheinauen landscape protection area and are a habitat for storks, barn owls, peacocks, and a very large maternity colony of soprano pipistrelles (Mückenfledermaus).
