About the museum
The Albertina Modern is the Albertina's venue for modern and contemporary art. It opened in May 2020 in the Künstlerhaus on Karlsplatz, just a few minutes' walk from the main building on Albertinaplatz. Its foundation is the Albertina's rapidly grown collection of art after 1945, which since 2017 also includes the Essl Collection; together the holdings comprise more than 60,000 works by about 5,000 artists.
The Künstlerhaus was built in the 1860s as an exhibition building for the Viennese artists' association and is regarded as a major work of Historicism in the Ringstrasse zone. After eventful decades, repeated demolition plans and major exhibitions in the 1980s and 1990s, the building stood under scaffolding for a long time. With the support of the patron Hans Peter Haselsteiner, from 2017 to 2020 it was faithfully restored under the direction of the Albertina's architecture collection, modernised, made barrier-free and extended on the lower and upper floors. The Künstlerhaus Vereinigung continues to be based on the upper floor.
On over 2,000 m², the Albertina Modern shows exclusively changing exhibitions – both presentations from its own holdings with Austrian positions from Maria Lassnig to Hermann Nitsch to Valie Export, and international art from Pop Art to the present.
