About the museum
The Kalchofengut in Unken is a Mitterpinzgau single-structure farmhouse (Einhof) whose origins go back to the 13th century; living quarters and farm buildings lie under one roof. The farm is first documented in 1498 in the archiepiscopal land register, but is considered one of the oldest farmsteads in the Unken basin. Striking features are the stone door and window surrounds made of local conglomerate, the memorial boards for the dead on the barn door and the marble elements on the front door, windows and façade.
The museum's history begins in 1969 with the founding of the Museumsverein Festung Kniepaß Unken. In 1972 the association rented three rooms in the Kalchofengut for a museum, until the entire house became available from 1985. Today the Museumsverein Unken runs the regional museum.
The tour leads through the parlour, smoke kitchen and front stable up to the bedroom on the upper floor. Exhibits include Pinzgau traditional costumes, rosaries, religious relics, an old church nativity scene and the development of the Unken primary school since 1616. In the barn, the exhibition "Unteres Saalachtal: Lebensraum! – Grenzraum?" (Lower Saalach Valley: Habitat! – Border region?) explains the region with a 12-square-metre landscape model; further areas are devoted to forestry, wheelwrighting, beekeeping and flax processing, and to poaching. Events are also held in the stable and parlour.
