About the museum
At the beginning of the 19th century, Hirschbach im Mühlkreis became a small centre of farmhouse furniture production: from around 1780 to 1860, carpenters and joiners with their families made chests, cupboards, bowl racks, tables, benches and beds that were artfully and colourfully painted. In the mid-20th century this furniture became world famous.
To preserve and present this heritage, the association "Freunde der Hirschbacher Bauernmöbel" was founded in 1991 and runs the museum on a voluntary basis in the Edlmühle. Typical features of the furniture are red rocaille ornaments, glued-on and painted-over copper engravings, veneer painting, faux inlays, marbling and the "Hirschbacher Sträußl" (Hirschbach bouquet).
Besides the furniture, the house shows everyday farm objects, tableware and small-scale religious art, works by Franz von Zülow, who adopted Hirschbach as his home, and in the attic a tribute to Johann Jax. Special exhibitions are held several times a year in the drive room of the Edlmühle; the adjoining Kräuterstadel has a seminar room and a photo exhibition on the Hi10 hiking trail.
