About the museum
The museum is housed in the "Schulstückl" of Bad Leonfelden, which was built in 1577 as the "Domus Disciplinae" (house of education). The inscription above the entrance is regarded as evidence that it is probably the oldest surviving school building in Upper Austria. The originally single-storey stone building was attached to the town hall and extended as far as the then village cemetery. After the introduction of compulsory schooling it received an upper floor with a classroom and an adjoining room for the teacher. Lessons were held here until 1850; later the building served, among other things, the district court, with one chamber used as a prison cell.
The museum opened in 1988 and has since been among the well-known institutions of Upper Austria's museum landscape. It is run by the Verein OÖ. Schulmuseum, whose volunteer team also provides the guided tours and educational programmes. In 2020 the museum received the Austrian Museum Seal of Quality for the third time.
On around 200 square metres, the exhibition shows the history of elementary education over the last five centuries. Its centrepiece is a fully furnished classroom from around 1900, in which historical lessons are also held. In addition there are a library with textbooks from 1774 to 1962, a cabinet of teaching aids with specimens and technical models, a film cabinet with old silent films, and the former prison cell. Since 2025, digital museum guides in three languages have been available for individual visitors.
