About the museum
Plans for a museum of the 9th district existed as early as the 1920s, but they were not realised until 1957, when a museum association was founded. In 1959 the first permanent display was set up in two rooms in the district office building, and from 1960 newsletters were published regularly. In 1973 the local history museum officially became the Bezirksmuseum Alsergrund.
As early as 1972, parts of the estate of Heimito von Doderer, who lived on Währinger Straße from 1956, formed the basis of a memorial to the writer. In 1995 a room followed for the poet Erich Fried, who was born in Alsergrund, with furniture from his London study. Later additions included a religion room, the use of the bunker in the adjoining Arne-Karlsson-Park, and the Sparefroh-Haus in the courtyard pavilion, which shows a collection of World Savings Day gifts since 1957.
In 2015/16 the permanent exhibition was completely redesigned in renovated rooms. It covers architecture, housing, work and leisure in the district, the Wäschermädel of the Rossau, book printing, carriage and vehicle building, medicine and research around the AKH and the Josephinum, and the Volksoper. Since March 2026 the museum has been directed by the art historian Anja Grebe.
