About the museum

Prince Johann Adam Andreas of Liechtenstein acquired the property in 1687 and had a palace with a large garden built there from 1688 onwards. Planning was initially by Domenico Egidio Rossi, from 1692 by Domenico Martinelli. The prince hired leading artists for the decoration: Andrea Pozzo painted the ceiling fresco of the Hercules Hall, Johann Michael Rottmayr, Marcantonio Franceschini and Antonio Bellucci created further frescoes, Santino Bussi the stucco work. The baroque garden was redesigned in the classical style around 1820 according to plans by Joseph Kornhäusel.

From 1805 to 1938, the princely picture gallery was open to the public in the palace. From 1979 to 2001, the Museum of Modern Art Foundation Ludwig Vienna used the building. Afterwards, the princely family presented their collection from 2004 to 2011 as the Liechtenstein Museum.

Today the Gartenpalais is operated by the Liechtenstein Group primarily as an event venue. Selected works from the Princely Collections – paintings from the Early Renaissance to the High Baroque, bronzes, pietra dura work, furniture, porcelain and tapestries – continue to be displayed in the state rooms, but only within booked tours. Highlights include the Hercules Hall, the Golden Coach in the Sala Terrena and the Princely Library with around 100,000 volumes. The surrounding Liechtenstein Park is freely accessible during the day.
