About the museum

The Museumsverein Ottakring was founded in 1935, and after intensive collecting with the support of the local population, the then "Heimatmuseum" opened on 9 May 1937. The first rooms were in a wing of the Abele school, and the first director was the writer Ludwig Rossa. When the war began in 1939 the museum had to close, because the street-side part of the rooms was needed as a ration office for issuing food, tobacco and textile ration cards.

In the first post-war years the district museum moved to the municipal district office at Richard-Wagner-Platz, where it reopened on 18 May 1952. After another interruption of several years due to construction work, the next reopening followed on 21 May 1976. Rudolf Wagner and Robert Medek were succeeded as director by Jochen Müller.

On just under 140 square metres, the permanent exhibition uses objects, documents and photos to show how the rural suburbs of Ottakring and Neulerchenfeld became part of the big city. It covers political development, working life and social life, as well as social changes at key turning points. The collection includes objects on viticulture, an originally preserved accordion workshop and the estate of the Krehan mother-of-pearl goods factory. Changing exhibitions in the anteroom and a small reference library on local history complete the offering.
