About the museum

On 20 May 1964, the then district head Leo Mistinger founded the Rudolfsheim-Fünfhauser Heimatstube association, which initially limited itself to collecting. Seven years later the museum was given a few rooms on the ground floor of the administrative building at Rosinagasse 4. It opened on 14 June 1972 with the exhibition "Die Westbahn"; its first director was the special-needs teacher Brigitte Kaufmann.

The Neo-Renaissance administrative building was erected from 1882 to 1884 to plans by Gustav Matthies and Alois Schumacher. It stands on the site of the courtyard of the former Fünfhaus brewery, which was built in the late 18th century and expanded in the 1860s into a popular entertainment venue, the "Zobelbaum".

On around 156 m², the museum shows a permanent exhibition on the history of the 15th district, plus one or two special exhibitions per year and display cases on changing themes. The objects include a historic water pipe, a time clock from the company Bally, a guest book of the Einküchenhaus and angel figures from the chapel of the former Elisabethspital. The museum sees itself as a universal museum and meeting place: it hosts lectures, readings, cultural walks, open-mic evenings and clothes-swap parties. The focus is on work with children – with workshops, an annual drawing competition and a children's festival week in summer.
