About the museum

As a student, the architect Anton Brenner designed a small municipal housing block on Rauchfangkehrergasse in 1924/25 for the city of Vienna. The city specified flats of only around 38 square meters; Brenner showed how one could live comfortably in them with built-in cupboards, fold-down beds, a shower toilet and a four-square-meter kitchen. His kitchen is considered a forerunner of the famous Frankfurt Kitchen.

Brenner moved into one of these flats himself, and his family lived there for a long time. As a result, the prototype of the small flat has largely survived in its original condition. The association Zeit!Raum restored the flat with support from the Federal Monuments Office and the culture department of the City of Vienna, and has made it accessible as a museum since 2010; it is the first municipal housing flat to be run as a museum.

On display are the original fitted furnishings with wall-mounted units, the functional kitchen, the rubbish chute and many other well-thought-out details of "Red Vienna". The flat can be visited only on a guided tour.
