About the museum
As early as the 1880s, local historians built up collections on the history of Simmering and founded a local history association; in the 1930s they set up a local history exhibition. The collections of the local historian Leopold Swatosch later formed the foundation of the Simmeringer Heimatmuseum. From 1954 to 1965 the "Heimatmuseum" was housed in the Schulstückl on Braunhubergasse.
Since 1965 the district museum has had its permanent home on the ground floor of the administrative building for the 11th district on Enkplatz, built in 1895. For around fifty years it was run on a voluntary basis by Hans Havelka, and for decades Herbert Exenberger also served as curator. Since 1998 the historian Petra Leban has run the museum as a volunteer, at first together with Havelka and since 2006 as museum director.
The permanent exhibition is organised by the former villages and present-day parts of the district and presents information and photos on the district's sights. Old engravings and photographs document the development into an industrial location, and a display case recreates the centre of Simmering around 1834 true to scale. Research focuses are the Avar finds from Kaiserebersdorf, Schloss Neugebäude and the history of the Wiener Neustädter Kanal. An extensive photo archive and a library are open to interested visitors, along with changing special exhibitions, museum tours, district tours and junior programmes.
