About the museum

As early as the 1960s, the then Federal Customs and Customs Guard School in Vienna exhibited individual worthwhile items from customs service; later the new customs school displayed uniforms and service weapons in display cases. The collection became the official Österreichisches Zollmuseum (Austrian Customs Museum) in October 2012, with the opening of the new Vienna customs office.

The exhibition in the Vienna customs station consists of three rooms. The first shows service weapons from the monarchy to today, along with uniforms, customs office signs and documents up to the end of the Habsburg monarchy. The second is dedicated to the interwar period, the uniforms of World War II, the integration of the customs guard into the Reich Finance Administration, and customs service at the Iron Curtain.

The third room covers the postwar period up to the dissolution of the uniformed customs guard in 2004, after Austria joined the EU. The museum belongs to the Federal Ministry of Finance and has been run on a voluntary basis since 2018 by Regierungsrat Erich Flucka.
