About the museum
The castle on the rock above the confluence of the Moravian and German Thaya is among the earliest stone castles in the territory of present-day Austria. From the 11th to the 13th century it was the centre of an imperial county; its medieval name gave rise to the Czech name for Austria. The first complex consisted of a solid residential building, a chapel on the rock summit and the pentagonal keep that still stands today.
From 1183 Raabs passed to the Maissauer family and then, for almost three and a half centuries, to the Puchheimer family, who expanded the castle with a curtain wall and Gothic buildings and gradually converted it into a palace in the 16th century. In the 18th century further owners, including the barons of Bartenstein, had palace-like rooms installed.
Today the publishing house Bibliothek der Provinz uses the castle for readings, concerts and exhibitions. During the season, tours lead from the arcaded courtyard over the bridge to the Hungerturm, through the castle courtyards and the knights' halls to the balcony with a view of the town; art and book exhibitions are also shown along the way.
