About the museum
Carl Hermann was born in Styria in 1918, studied sculpture in Graz and from 1945 until his death in 1986 lived in Gmünd as a freelance artist. He is regarded as a co-founder of the Blockheide Nature Park, as the initiator of the North-South long-distance trail 05 and as the creator of the Heidemännlein figures.
Between 1964 and 1967 he built the house on Fuchssteinweg together with his wife Elsa. It stands on a rising plot crossed by granite blocks and is literally built into the rock; stone, wood, masonry and glass define its look. The studio is at garden level, the living floor has a hall with a parlour and kitchen, and under the roof there are two further rooms and the sculptor's retreat. Hermann artistically designed the house as a kind of calling card.
The estate and the house later passed into private ownership and were comprehensively renovated in 2006/2007. Since 2019 the house has been open to visitors in the summer months; each year there is a new show offering a different view of Hermann's work, his collections and the Blockheide. Admission is free, and donations are welcome.
