About the museum
The Kunstmuseum Waldviertel goes back to the artists Heide and Makis Warlamis. In 1992 the two founded the international centre for art and design I.DE.A. in Schrems, and in 2009 they established the non-profit Kunstmuseum Waldviertel. Makis Warlamis (1942–2016), architect, painter, designer and poet, shaped the museum until his death; Heide Warlamis, sculptor and designer, also plays a defining role in its programme.
Every year the museum shows a new themed exhibition with painting, sculpture, architecture and design, often with works by the founders but also with international guests. Since 1993 there has been a cooperation with the University of Art and Design in Cluj-Napoca. The exhibitions aim to make art accessible to a broad public and are accompanied by workshops, tours and events.
The site of around 12,000 square metres includes the sculpture park “Park des Staunens” (Park of Wonder) with garden architecture and artworks, a museum café with a terrace, a museum shop and the neighbouring I.DE.A. Design Centre. The museum places particular emphasis on children and young people: its own academy for children and young people, creative courses and children's birthday parties complement the exhibitions.
