About the museum
Favianis, present-day Mautern, was favourably situated on the Danube Limes, where the narrow Wachau valley opens out again. An auxiliary fort was built on a high terrace and was rebuilt several times over the centuries. Unlike many other forts, Favianis was not reduced in size in late antiquity but was even enlarged, which is unusual in the province of Noricum.
An important insight into this period is provided by the Life of Saint Severin, written by Eugippius: Severin lived and died in Favianis in 482 AD. Since 2021, Mautern, with the surviving walls and towers of the fort and its underground archaeological remains, has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Danube Limes.
The Roman Museum was housed in the Baroque granary (Schüttkasten) next to Mautern Castle. It is currently undergoing a comprehensive redesign including a move to a new location and is no longer open at its previous site. In the meantime, Mautern Town Hall is showing the small exhibition "Favianis – das römische Mautern" with selected, significant objects from the collections that present the fort and civilian life on the Limes. The museum is headed by Philipp Stabentheiner.
