Friedensmuseum Wien

About the museum

The Peace Museum Vienna was founded in 2014 with the aim of putting peace itself at the centre. It was initiated by the peace activist Liska Blodgett, who also founded peace museums in Paris, Nepal and Colorado. From the start, the museum has brought together the stories of significant peacemakers with everyday actions that strengthen understanding, empathy and cooperation.

The guiding idea is the concept of “Positive Peace”: peace means more than the absence of violence, namely conditions in which communities can thrive through fairness, inclusion, human rights, education and cooperation. The museum sees itself as part of Vienna’s long tradition of international dialogue and as a welcoming place for visitors of all ages.

It is housed in the Blutgasse in the 1st district. In addition to exhibitions, it offers art, educational programmes and events; its projects include Windows for Peace, Posters4Peace, Peace Interviews, Music for Peace and Peace Kitchen evenings. The museum is part of a small international network of peace museums and is run as an association; the website is mostly in English.
