About the museum

The house on Domgasse behind St. Stephen's Cathedral dates back to a 15th-century townhouse. Around 1716 it received its present appearance through master mason Andrea Simone Carove; after the later owner, court stuccoworker Albert Camesina, it is still called the Camesinahaus today.

Wolfgang Amadé Mozart lived here from 1784 to 1787 with his family in the largest and most expensive apartment of his life. During these years at the height of his creative power, works such as 'Le Nozze di Figaro' and three string quartets dedicated to Haydn were created. It is the only one of his numerous Viennese apartments that has been preserved to this day.

On the occasion of Mozart's 250th birthday, the building was thoroughly renovated and opened as Mozarthaus Vienna on 27 January 2006. Over approximately 1,000 square meters and three levels, the museum is dedicated to the ten years Mozart spent in Vienna: his social environment, his Viennese operas and finally the original apartment. The house is operated by a subsidiary of Wien Holding; concert hall and Figaro Lounge additionally serve for concerts and events.
