About the museum

High above the town on the edge of the Vienna Woods stands the Art Nouveau building that the Verein der Niederösterreichischen Landesfreunde in Baden had built as a museum; it opened in 1905. It bears its name with the special permission of the imperial household. At first it displayed folk-culture collections, and the association also earned merit through excavations on the Rauheneckerberg and in the Königshöhle cave: the finds of the "Baden culture" recovered there are of great scientific importance.

After severe destruction and looting in 1945, reconstruction began only in 1960; on 6 September 1965 the newly arranged collections were reopened under the motto "Crafts and Folk Art". Later a collection of weapons and uniforms and sacred art were added, and in 1986 an attached café.

Since 2008 a team of association members has been gradually redesigning the permanent collection. It began with the Kaiser-Jubiläumssaal (Emperor Jubilee Hall), which shows the Habsburgs' influence on Baden's architecture, customs and lifestyle; in 2012 the crafts hall and the sacred hall followed. The grounds also include a cave in which bats now live, a Székely gate and a bust of the Emperor from 1898.
