About the museum
The building on the Hauptplatz was a town palace that the French architect Charles de Moreau had remodelled for Prince Nikolaus II Esterházy. From 1813 it served as the summer residence of the imperial family; Emperor Francis I spent nearly every summer there until his death in 1835. His wife Maria Ludovica, however, was at first not very enthusiastic about the accommodation.
In 1917 the Kaiserhaus once again became an important place: Emperor Charles led the armies from here after the army high command had been moved to Baden. Afterwards the building fell into a long slumber until the city of Baden bought it in 2008. After a comprehensive renovation, it showed temporary exhibitions on the first floor from 2013.
Due to the strained financial situation, the city decided not to show a new exhibition in 2025; the building remains temporarily closed. The Kaiserhaus is one of the museums of the city of Baden, which also include the Rollettmuseum, the Beethovenhaus and the Puppen- und Spielzeugmuseum, which can still be visited in the meantime.
