About the museum
The Karden- und Heimatmuseum is located in the old school building on Kirchenplatz in Katsdorf. The Heimatverein Katsdorf und Umgebung, founded in 1986, set up the museum in 1988 and still runs it today. It tells the economic and local history of the municipality, with a particular focus on the weaver's teasel (Weberkarde).
The teasel is a biennial crop whose seed heads were once used to raise the nap of cloth. In Austria there were two cultivation areas, one near Graz and one east of Linz in the lower Mühlviertel. Katsdorf became the center of teasel cultivation in the Mühlviertel, and around 1900 some 800 teasel growers planted the crop. In the Kardenstube, visitors learn more about it.
Further focal points are prehistoric finds from the Katsdorf area, flax cultivation, farm tools and equipment, rural crafts, and relics from the First and Second World Wars. A schoolroom, a crafts room and a teacher's apartment convey the everyday life of earlier times; collected drawings, essays and tests from the 1940s to the 1970s invite class reunions in the museum. The house also takes part in the "Liberation Objects" project of the Mauthausen Memorial and shows connections to the Mauthausen and Gusen camps.
