About the museum
Riedegg Castle in the Mühlviertel is first mentioned around 1150. In the 16th century it was converted into a palace. About a hundred years later the fortress and palace burned down; only the palace was rebuilt, while the neighbouring fortress fell into decay and can be seen today as a ruin.
From 1936 to 2015 the palace belonged to the Mariannhill Missionaries, who ran an educational institution there. Since the conversions of the 1970s it has housed a small Africa museum, regarded as the only one of its kind in the Mühlviertel. It shows an ethnographic collection with animal specimens from South Africa, everyday objects of the Zulu, weapons, jewellery and religious objects.
After the palace was sold to a group of investors in 2015, the Mariannhill Missionaries retained the chapel, museum and cemetery. The palace itself now serves, among other things, as a medical and therapy centre and as residential accommodation.
