About the museum
The palais on Gallusstraße was built in 1848 as the residence of the Pforzheim jewellery manufacturer Güllich. Around three decades later, in 1887, Prince Gustav von und zu Thurn und Taxis acquired the villa together with its large park; hence the name "Palais Thurn und Taxis". Since 1915 the property has belonged to the City of Bregenz, and the adjoining park is one of the largest public gardens on Lake Constance.
Since 1953 the Vorarlberg professional association of visual artists has used the palais as an exhibition venue and association headquarters. In 1983/84 the association renovated the building and the gardener's house; this outbuilding has since served as secretariat, library, archive and lithography workshop.
The Künstlerhaus sees itself as a house of and for artists: the members shape the programme themselves, with changing exhibitions, events and collaborations. There is no permanent exhibition.
