About the museum
St. Pölten was made the capital of Lower Austria in 1986 following a referendum. Ten years later the provincial government moved to the banks of the Traisen, where the government quarter and the cultural district form a district of their own. At its centre stands the Landhaus with the so-called Landtagsschiff (“parliament ship”), where the Landtag meets and press conferences are held.
The ground floor of the Landtagsschiff has housed the Forum Landtag visitor centre since September 2022. It sees itself as a place for thinking along and for encounter, not as a collection of political memorabilia. Numerous interactive stations explain how the Landtag works, what opportunities there are for citizen participation, who the members are, how elections work and how the Landtag has developed over time.
In front of the entrance, an art installation recalls that the province is the sum of its municipalities: the coats of arms of all 573 Lower Austrian municipalities form, as pixels, the lettering “Forum Landtag” together with the provincial logo, and a coat-of-arms finder shows the position of your own municipality. In addition, free tours of the Landhaus are offered, which include the Landhaus chapel designed by Arnulf Rainer, the Klangturm and art objects in the government quarter.
