About the museum
The Lungauer Heimatmuseum is located on Kirchengasse in the center of Tamsweg, in the former Barbara Hospital. This institution for poor relief, with its chapel, dates back to the Middle Ages, was rebuilt after the fire of the market town in 1742, and remained in operation until 1962. The market municipality then made the building available for a museum.
The reason for the collection was the modernization of many farms around 1960: furniture and work tools that no one needed anymore were gathered by the museum's founders before they could be sold or destroyed. The house opened in 1965. It is run by the Lungauer Museumsverein Tamsweg (Lungau Museum Association); the chapel and a pavilion behind the building are used for changing thematic exhibitions.
The permanent exhibition spans several floors. On the top floor, tools from forest, construction and workshop show the hard work of earlier times, along with fabric production from flax cultivation to the shirt. A kitchen with an open hearth, a Baroque bedroom, chests and cupboards from the Gothic period to Lungau peasant rococo, and locks, keys and fittings illustrate the living culture of around five centuries. Further rooms are devoted to customs such as the Tamsweger Samson and the Preberschießen, as well as the Roman past of the Lungau.
