About the museum
Schloss Moosham rises at Unternberg on a wooded hill above the Mur valley and the bog from which it takes its name. Roman settlement remains were found in the surrounding area; the castle is first mentioned in 1191. After the Moosheim family, which lost the castle after a feud with the Salzburg Archbishop, it passed to the Archdiocese at the end of the 13th century.
From 1520 Moosham was the seat of the Lungau court. From here the Archbishop's administrators governed the region for almost 270 years with tax, police and criminal jurisdiction. A dark chapter is the witch trials between 1534 and 1762, in which numerous people were executed.
After the court was moved in 1790, the castle fell into disrepair. In 1886, polar explorer and art patron Count Hans Nepomuk Wilczek bought it, had it restored and furnished with his extensive collection. Thus a museum was created that, in addition to art and antiquities, displays Lungau tile stoves, chests, traditional costumes, weapons and entire farmhouse rooms.
Moosham remains in the Wilczek family's possession and is run privately. It can only be visited with tours; the castle has frequently served as a set for film and television productions.
