About the museum
The Marmormuseum Adnet was founded in 1992 and completely redesigned in 2010. It then moved into the new municipal building of Adnet, where it documents the famous red stone in around 100 square metres of exhibition rooms and in a museum garden. In 2014 the museum received the Austrian Museum Seal of Quality.
Adnet marble has shaped the village for millennia; records from the 2nd century already attest Roman quarries. Strictly speaking it is a limestone. At its peak about 15 quarries were in operation; today there are still five. The stone was used, for example, for the colonnade of the Parliament in Vienna and the Mariensäule in Munich.
The exhibition explains the formation, quarrying, processing and transport of the marble. On display are various types of marble, fossils, marble spheres, bowls and vases, archaeological finds from Adnet, stonemasons' tools as well as Roman and medieval workpieces, models and wall fountains. The museum is also the starting point for guided tours along the Marble Trail through the quarries.
