Temporarily closed. The museum in the Schloßberg tunnel is currently not open to the public because fire safety requirements and the lack of an operating permit prevent visitor operation. Individual visits and small groups, for example from clubs and specialists, are possible by prior registration via email.

About the museum

The Verein Montan- und Werksbahnmuseum Graz founded the museum in 1983. It is housed in a section of the Schloßberg tunnel made available by the City of Graz, which was driven into the hill from 1937 and served as an air-raid shelter for tens of thousands of people from Graz during the Second World War. After the war, a fairy-tale grotto railway ran here for a time.

On around 2.5 kilometres of track with points and crossings, the museum shows the development of underground rail transport on a 600 mm gauge. The collection includes more than 60 locomotives powered by battery, overhead wire, diesel, alcohol, paraffin and compressed air, as well as over 200 underground wagons; many of the vehicles are in working order and were demonstrated during guided tours. According to MUSIS, it is the most extensive underground railway museum in Europe on this gauge.

The site is looked after on a voluntary basis by the support association. Because of fire safety requirements and the lack of an operating permit, regular visitor operation is currently not possible.
