About the museum
Behind the museum is the entrepreneur Heinz J. Angerlehner, born in 1943, who founded an assembly-technology company in 1980 and withdrew from its management in 2007. He then devoted himself more intensively to art, which he had long collected. In 2009 he acquired his company's former premises in Thalheim bei Wels in order to make his collection publicly accessible there.
After a Europe-wide architectural competition with 16 participating firms, the choice fell on the design by Wolf Grossruck of Grieskirchen. The former assembly and industrial halls were converted from May 2012; the industrial past remains legible in the building. At the same time, pedestrian bridges over the Traun and the Aiterbach were built, connecting Thalheim with Wels. The museum opened on 12 September 2013.
The collection today comprises more than 3,000 works by over 500 artists. It focuses on painting, complemented by drawings, prints, photographs and sculptures. It shows mainly Austrian art after 1945 in an international context, with particular attention to Upper Austria. At its heart is a visible storage display about 50 metres long that offers a permanent insight into the holdings; in addition there are changing solo and group exhibitions in the large hall, the salon and the graphics and gallery rooms.
