About the museum
The area around St. Marienkirchen an der Polsenz, known locally as “Samarein”, is famous for the quality of its cider; even the municipal coat of arms commemorates it with a cider press. When the old granary of the rectory threatened to fall into disrepair in the 1970s, it was renovated and set up as a Heimathaus with a focus on cider. The granary is part of the rectory complex, probably dates from around 1700, and took on its present appearance after a major fire in 1822.
On the ground floor is the originally preserved press house with equipment for cider making from three centuries: the mighty Rosswalzel, a huge screw press, various fruit mills and a barrel holding 3,200 litres. The first floor is devoted to coopering, old units of measure and life in the sparse parlours, and explains at information stands what cider is called elsewhere in the world. A bottle collection is intended to grow into one of the largest of its kind.
On the second floor, agricultural tools are shown following the rhythm of the farming year: wooden ploughs, a model threshing machine, cider transporters and old beehives. On request, there is a look into the walk-in storage depot in the attic. The tour ends with a sip of Samarein cider or juice. The museum is run by the association Lebenswertes Samarein.
