About the museum
The Grüne Haus (Green House) in the centre of Reutte is one of the most stately buildings in the town. It was probably built in the 16th century as a residence by a wealthy citizen; paintings in the interior date from that time. The painter Johann Jakob Zeiller, a native of Reutte, designed the façade in 1779; its strong green gave the house its name.
Since 1986 the building has belonged to the municipality of Reutte. After extensive conversion and restoration, the Tyrolean State Exhibition was held here in 1989, and since 1990 the building has housed the museum. It is run by the Museumsverein Reutte and has been awarded the Tyrolean Museum Prize and the Austrian Museum Seal of Quality.
Between the changing special exhibitions, the permanent exhibition offers an overview of the history of Reutte: from its first mention and the importance of the salt trade and its development into a commercial and industrial centre to the days of misfortune that the town survived. Since September 2021 the Erinnerungsort Südtiroler-Siedlung has also been part of the museum, a show apartment restored to its original condition in one of the best-preserved settlements of its kind. The planet trail "Reutte unter den Sternen" also starts at the museum.
