About the museum

The Museum im Lavanthaus opened in November 2009 and sees itself as the museum of the Lavanttal region and a platform for regional knowledge. The town of Wolfsberg is its sponsor; the house holds the Austrian Museum Seal of Quality (Österreichisches Museumsgütesiegel).

The permanent exhibition is organized into around 15 theme modules. They range from prehistory and the minerals of the valley through local history to literature, customs, habitats and the history of cinema. One of the museum's guiding questions is why Wolfsberg belonged to the bishops of Bamberg for 752 years. Multimedia and interactive stations add depth to the themes, including a dialect quiz, a digital flower lexicon, knowledge databases on the Lavanttal and a small cinema with short films.

The house also has an information point on the Stalag XVIII A prisoner-of-war camp, which existed near Wolfsberg during the Second World War. For children and school classes there are discovery trails and workshops; the admission ticket also covers the information point and the special exhibitions.
