About the museum
The St. Veit Museum was created in 2004 by merging the Town Museum (founded 1886) and the Transport Museum (founded 1982) into the town's central museum. It aims to bring to life the history of the former ducal town and of regional transport. The work is carried by the municipality with two employees and by the volunteer association Verkehrsmuseum St. Veit.
The permanent exhibition is divided into seven areas: town history, railways, model railways, a driving simulator of an electric railcar, motorisation including the gendarmerie, and post and telecommunications. The town history section shows paintings, coins, shooting targets and charters, honours the St. Veit Circle and presents the Bürgerliche Trabantengarde with the largest ceremonial flag in Europe as well as the Goldhaubenfrauen.
The model railways range from a digitally controlled H0 layout with the stations Hieflau and Maria Rain to a garden railway in the outdoor area, in operation since 2020. Since the 2023 season there has also been a dedicated room on the ground floor for changing special exhibitions.
