About the museum

The Schatzkammer Gurk goes back to the diocesan museum of the Diocese of Gurk, founded by Bishop Adam Hefter in 1917. Its foundation was the collection of Mathias Größer; Otto Rainer continued to build up the museum. For decades it was housed in the Bishop's Residence in Klagenfurt.

In 2014 the collection moved to the historic Propsthof of Gurk Abbey, right next to the Romanesque cathedral, and has borne the name Schatzkammer Gurk ever since. The architects Winkler+Ruck deliberately designed the presentation in the Gothic and Baroque rooms to be restrained, so that the artworks take centre stage.

More than 300 objects of church art from Carinthia are on show: stained glass and panel painting, sculptures, liturgical vestments and implements. Among the most important pieces are the Magdalene window from Weitensfeld, one of the earliest stained-glass paintings in Austria, the crucifix from Höllein from the late 12th century, Gothic Madonnas, winged altarpieces, and a ring and pendant associated with Saint Hemma of Gurk. A visit combines well with a guided tour of Gurk Cathedral and its crypt.
