About the museum
The Naturmuseum Salzkammergut opened in 2009 and grew out of a private initiative by the Ebensee taxidermist Stefan Gratzer and his family. His aim was to make connections in nature clear and to inspire visitors with enthusiasm for biodiversity and nature conservation.
Over more than 700 square metres of exhibition space, the museum shows animals in recreated habitats. The permanent exhibition is organised by habitat: the mountain world as a refuge for endangered species, forests and fields shaped and threatened by humans, rivers, lakes and wetlands, settlement areas, and niches such as gravel pits and quarries. Changing special shows complement the offering, for example on the Himalayas, woodpeckers or giant beetles.
The museum sees itself as a meeting place for nature in the region and works closely with schools. The dioramas it creates are also lent out as loan exhibitions to other institutions. The Naturmuseum is a member of the Upper Austrian Museums Association and is open all year round.
