About the museum
The small two-storey building in the Kaiserpark of Bad Ischl was built between 1856 and 1861 to plans by the court gardener Franz Rauch. The Tudor-style building is clad in Untersberg marble, which gave it its name. Inside are Neo-Gothic details and carved figures with motifs from the Nibelungenlied.
Empress Elisabeth used the cottage as a breakfast and tea salon and as a private retreat in the summer months; here she wrote poems and received confidants. After the end of the monarchy it remained in the family's possession, and from 1926 a milk and coffee parlour was run in it.
After the Second World War the house fell increasingly into disrepair. In 1975 the province of Upper Austria took it over under a long-term agreement, and in 1978 the Photomuseum opened here with the photographic collection of Hans Frank – for a long time the only photography museum in Austria. It closed in 2020.
Since 2020 the newly founded OÖ Landes-Kultur GmbH has been running the Marmorschlössl with annually changing exhibitions, often contemporary art related to the place, partly extending into the Kaiserpark and the Imperial Stables. At the same time, floors, walls, the entrance door and windows are being restored step by step in coordination with the Federal Monuments Office.
