About the museum
The Austrian Post and Telegraph Museum opened in 2012 in Eisenerz in northern Styria. It is run by the Verein Postmuseum Eisenerz. It displays more than 2,000 exhibits from postal history, philately and culture, with a focus on the development of the postal system and electric telegraphy in the Austrian Empire and in Austria-Hungary.
The museum is housed in the Kammerhof, a building that already existed before 1498. It was the seat of the Kammergraf office, from which the iron industry of the monarchy was administered, and later served the Innerberger Hauptgewerkschaft. In 1879 Emperor Franz Joseph I bought the building and had it converted into a hunting lodge; after expropriation during the Nazi era and restitution in 1951, the Kammerhof remained in the possession of the Hohenberg family.
The display objects include a roadworthy, walk-in mail coach, an original imperial and royal post office from around 1900, postal history documents, writing and office utensils, and technical apparatus such as Morse keys, sounders, printing telegraphs and telephones. A purpose-built children's post office shows young visitors how telecommunication worked without mobile phones and the internet. The museum holds the Austrian Museum Seal of Quality and is a partner of the Steiermark Card.
