About the museum

As early as 1887, a "Lokalmuseum für den politischen Bezirk Leoben" (local museum for the political district of Leoben) opened in Leoben. Over the decades the small local history museum developed into an important institution of cultural life in Styria. For the Styrian provincial exhibition "made in styria" in 1997, the Kunsthalle was built; it later became the venue for major cultural-historical exhibitions, and the provincial exhibition alone drew over 1.3 million visitors.

In 2004 the MuseumsCenter Leoben opened. It uses the rooms of the historic Jesuit monastery and an annex built after the provincial exhibition, and has around 1,200 square meters of exhibition space, making it the second-largest museum in Styria. Its permanent exhibition "Schienen in die Vergangenheit" tells about 1,100 years of city history in seven phases, from the Hallstatt-period burial field of Leoben-Hinterberg through the founding of the town, trade and crafts, to the iron and steel industry in the orbit of the Styrian Erzberg (ore mountain).

Today the MuseumsCenter, the Kunsthalle and, since 2020, the city library together form the KulturQuartier in Leoben's old town. The Kunsthalle shows contemporary art free of charge, and the Junges Museum offers workshops and programs for children and school classes.
