About the museum

The Ötzi-Dorf opened in 2000, almost a decade after the discovery of the glacier mummy "Ötzi" at the Tisenjoch in the Ötztal Alps. Until that find, the Ötztal valley had hardly been studied archaeologically; subsequent investigations showed that people were already present here from around 8000 BC. The open-air park makes these often sparse traces vivid through reconstructions, models and replicas.

From an initial area of about 4,000 square meters, the site has grown over the years to about 12,000 square meters and is continuously being expanded. The operator explicitly does not see the village as a museum in the classic sense, but as a park for hands-on participation. Nevertheless, it carries the Austrian Museum Seal of Quality (Museumsgütesiegel) and includes an exhibition room with a film about village life.

On display are reconstructed huts for crafts, hunting and rituals, a cult area with menhirs and a stone-chamber grave, shaft wells, a copper smelting site, a grain field, and historic livestock breeds such as wild horses, aurochs and woolly pigs. Visitors can make fire, shoot with a yew bow or bake flatbread. A 1:1 reconstruction shows the find site at the Tisenjoch; according to the operator, around 50,000 guests visit each year.
