About the museum
In the middle of Oetz's old village center stands a medieval residential tower, once inhabited by a rural noble family. In the early modern period it served as the administrative seat for the estates of the Frauenchiemsee monastery in the Ötztal, and afterwards the municipality used it in many ways for decades. After a thorough renovation, the house opened as a museum in 2004 and received the Tyrolean Museum Prize the same year; in 2021, the Austrian Museum Prize followed for the Ötztal museums.
The foundation of the museum is the collection of Oetz art lover Hans Jäger. It comprises almost 5,000 objects, from medieval sacred art through the development of alpine landscape painting to sculpture, contemporary art and photography, and is shown in rotation. Jäger's private gallery in the village was already the forerunner of today's house.
The focus is on the artistic view of the Ötztal: how locals and guests have depicted the valley, and how these images changed. Further permanent exhibitions are devoted to the archaeology of the valley, the 700-year history of Oetz and the tower, and to postcards and advertising graphics from the summer-holiday era. The Turmmuseum belongs to the Ötztaler Museen, which it runs together with the Heimatmuseum in Längenfeld.
