About the museum
A fortified stronghold in Niederleis is documented from the early 14th century; the present building with four wings and round corner towers dates in its core from the 16th century. After Swedish troops had severely devastated the castle and village in the Thirty Years' War, the owners sold the lordship to Heiligenkreuz Abbey in 1651. The gatehouse portal dates from this period; the stone bridge with figures over the former moat was added in 1735.
In 1867 the Wallis family acquired the castle. From the 1880s in particular, Count Josef Wallis assembled an extensive art collection, mostly Italian sculpture and decorative arts from antiquity to the Renaissance, plus furniture, leather wall coverings and tapestries. In 1928 the property passed to the Schaffgotsch family, who still live there today.
In recent decades the castle has been extensively renovated and the moat recreated. The collection and the castle chapel, with a crucifix from the circle of Giotto, can be visited by prior appointment; the Knights' Hall is used for concerts, balls and wedding celebrations.
