About the museum
Since 1980, the Lower Austrian School Museum has been housed in the former primary school of Michelstetten. In 2007 the building was reopened and has since presented itself as the "Michelstettner Schule": a museum that wants to be a school again itself, with historic classrooms in which visitors take a seat at old desks.
In five classrooms, the story spans from the beginnings of schooling in antiquity through the time of Maria Theresa to the 20th century. Slate and slate pencil, abacus, wall charts, maps, textbooks and illustrative material show how people learned and taught in the past. Around 3,000 objects are on display; the collection as a whole comprises about 55,000 items.
Visitors can explore the building on their own or take part in a school lesson with a "strict teacher". There is also the "Michelstettner Matura" with an exam paper and certificate, as well as writing workshops in which people write with wax tablet, slate, quill and pen. The museum is run by the Verein NÖ Schulmuseum.
