About the museum

Traismauer goes back to the Roman fort Augustianis, one of the structures along the Danube Limes; the site now belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Grenzen des Römischen Reiches" (Frontiers of the Roman Empire). The town is also mentioned in the Nibelungenlied: Kriemhild is said to have spent the night in the castle on her way to King Etzel.

For almost a thousand years, the castle was the administrative seat of the Archbishops of Salzburg. During this time it grew from Roman foundations through Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque parts into its present form. In recent years it has developed into a cultural center for the town, which also houses the tourist information office and the regional wine tasting room WeinArtZone.

The exhibition "Traismaurer Schätze" combines three focal points: finds from the Roman era, the archive of the Wiener Internationale Operettengesellschaft (Vienna International Operetta Society), with scores and instruments related to the operetta composer Carl Michael Ziehrer, and the Traismaurer Krippenspiel. The wooden rod puppets have been performed during Advent for more than 200 years; the play has been on Austria's national register of intangible cultural heritage since November 2021. Another section is devoted to patterns that the residents of Traismauer have discovered in the town and in nature.
