About the museum
It began with a Marian chapel, built between 1733 and 1735 as a pilgrimage site for a miraculous image. The painter Paul Troger created the dome frescoes in 1735. From about 1740 to 1760 the complex grew into a three-winged Baroque castle whose forms are influenced by the architecture of Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt.
Auxiliary Bishop Franz Anton Marxer acquired the property in 1754 and financed the expansion after winning a lottery. In the west wing he set up a seminary for priests, which existed until 1783. The grand staircase and the chapel are especially artfully appointed; the pilgrimage church, with frescoes by Franz Anton Maulpertsch, is built onto the castle.
From 1964 to 2001 the north and east wings housed the Lower Austrian Baroque Museum. Since its closure the castle has served as a private event venue where Sunday matinees take place in summer; an exhibition on the nursing profession and nursing training can be seen in the rooms. Visits are possible after advance booking.
