About the museum
Gmünd received town rights in 1346 and was fortified in that period with a town wall and four town gates; after the great town fire of 1504 the wall was extended again. The Lower City Tower forms the Lower Town Gate and remains one of the entrances to the old town to this day.
From 1996 to 2024, the Kulturinitiative Gmünd and later the Künstler:innenstadt Gmünd non-profit private foundation staged major summer exhibitions in the tower. Over three floors, high-quality printmaking was shown, from Dürer and Goya through Miró and Matisse to Picasso and Chagall. The Stadtturmgalerie thus became a venue for printmaking known well beyond the region.
Since 2025, the renovated Kunsthaus Gmünd at Hauptplatz 25 has taken over the large summer exhibitions. The Stadtturm nevertheless remains an exhibition venue and continues to show art during the summer season; according to the published information, there is no permanent collection or city museum there.
