About the museum
The basic collection of the Bezirks-Museums-Verein Mödling district museum association was first housed in the Thonetschlössl and was looked after by Melanie Wissor. In 1984 the expanded collection moved into its own house, a 16th- or 17th-century wine-grower's house in Mödling's old town, which gives the objects a suitable setting. Since 1994 the mechanical Egerländer Krippe from the second half of the 19th century has also been on display there; a young railway worker brought it from Bohemia around 1900.
The rooms show rural and urban life in the region: forestry work with the tools of pitch-makers and charcoal burners, viticulture with a large press and a 3,000-liter cask with a guild chest from 1697, arable farming and dairy farming, plus a forge from around 1900. On the upper floor there is a smoke kitchen (Rauchkuchl), a 19th-century kitchen, musical instruments, sacred objects, references to the Southern Railway and local lines, and a historic school classroom from the early 20th century.
In the courtyard, a walnut tree, a demonstration garden with flowers, herbs and vegetables, and an open barn with larger equipment invite visitors to linger. During Advent the house turns into a craft market; then the crib is in operation too.
